The Life is Yoga Programme, a pilot project which preceded the Children of Light Educare, led to Hatha Yoga classes being set up for young children and adults living in Maitland.

In 2015, we introduced Hatha Yoga classes on a trial basis to a handful of women living in Maitland Garden Village, where low income and high unemployment present all too familiar obstacles for communities in and around Cape Town. The Ashrama’s involvement followed a request from a member of a community-led initiative, aimed at strengthening ties within the community through activities that promote health, self-esteem and self-reliance.

With parents at Village Tods Educare seeing the positive impact that Yoga was having on their 5 – 7 year old children attending weekly classes as part of the ‘Life is Yoga Programme’, a new intention was set for adults in the surrounding community to experience Yoga as a means of improving health and reducing the negative impacts of stress. The interest and dedication demonstrated by this initial group of women has led to a 5-year long commitment to delivering weekly classes in the Village.

In 2017, we responded to a request from the City of Cape Town’s Social Development Team and set up a second community based Hatha Yoga class, this time to accommodate a group of senior citizens living in and around the larger suburb of Maitland.
Both classes are taught on a volunteer basis and, as such, are free of charge. For more information, please send an email to info@anandakutir.org.za

South Africa’s fast pace into a Covid-19 lockdown scenario saw these classes being stopped in March 2020.  It is unlikely that they’ll recommence in 2020.
